Currently, due to COVID-19, the future seems a bit uncertain, but I do hope to obtain employment at a middle or high school for the 2020-2021 school year. Although, transferring to online has been interesting, it definitely was a great learning experience.
I try to live by the quote, “Do not seek praise, seek criticism,” by Paul Arden. While with my mentor teachers, I tried to consistently reflect and ask her if she has any feedback for my practice. My strengths lie in my knowledge of both digital and fine arts, which allows me to connect to this generation’s interests, and career opportunities. I also try to scaffold their lessons in the most logical manner I can, I do this in order to build on my student’s strengths. In addition, I continuously make the effort to be proactive in having materials and lessons easily accessible to all students in the classroom. My biggest strength is making connections and relationships with students in both small group and one on one settings, building that trust is key to building their confidence in themselves and ultimately their work.
Overall, I always make an effort throughout the day to question my practices in the classroom, as well as to discuss them with mentors to further analyze my performance for improvement. I believe a lot of my strengths lie in my formative assessments because during this process I am not only discussing student work, but I am actively building relationships with my students. I believe this is not only important to do for learning about their artistic choices and their aesthetics, but it is also important to know when a student is not putting in the effort you know that they are capable of. This then tells me that they may need redirection, are having trouble with something, or may possibly need differentiation. Understanding the different levels of individual student abilities allows me to have high expectations for them, while still being understanding and wanting them to enjoy the creative process.
